Crime; An agent of anti-technology in Nigeria.
Criminal activities are leading us back to the stone age (metaphorically), Fine! It won’t get that bad but it will be bad. Nowadays, many people are afraid to make judicious use of technological products like ATM cards, sophisticated phones and computer systems to mention a few and the mostly concerned ones. What is the need of having a phone that can surf the internet or an Atm card, or a computer system if you are scared of taking it out with you? Atm card theft is now so common that, many have now decided to leave their cards at how (please what then is the use?) these criminal do not just pick pockets, they take you down to atm machines and make you withdraw the money and hand it over to them, some of them request for your pin and do the withdrawal themselves, who are you not to oblige when the police is more of a friend to them than to you.
On your smart phones, there are bank applications that are meant to make financial transaction convenient and easy, but these same men would force you to make transfer of your money to them in broad day lights, so you are forced to uninstall the app on your phones, what value then is the smart phones or the use of bank apps?
It is true that technological advancements come from loopholes, errors of faults in previous versions well, it doesn’t come from the inability to use them or the fear of using them. When the use of these things is putting people at risk of even loosing their lives then its purpose is defeated.
Many developed countries have gone passed the fear of having to carry their phones in their pockets or bags and fear of putting Atm cards in their purses or wallets but we are still struggling with these. Why can’t these criminals be tracked? They boldly walk to the Atm machines without covering their faces and withdraw all the money in their victims account without the fear of being caught someday, someway or somehow. You are attacked, dragged and a policeman is just by the corner himself scared of approaching these criminals.
Everything is wrong with everything, we have abandoned out Atm cards at home, we have uninstalled all the apps that would have been of good use to us, we now use our computer system at home because we can’t be seen with a laptop bag pack in a broad daylight.
Are we developing or under-developing?
What measures should be put in place to protect the citizens and to ensure we utilize the technologies at our disposal?
